言葉通りに、葉や枝をポキポキ折ったりしないでくださいね(^-^;

It's Almost November!

Today, I'd like to talk about a Japanese word related to November: Momijigari

【What is “Momijigari”?】

・What does it mean?

Momijigari is an autumn activity in which people visit mountains, countryside areas, or parks     to enjoy the beautiful scenery of trees with red and yellow leaves.

・How do you read it?

✖  It is NOT read as Kōyōgari

Why do we use the word “gari” (狩り), meaning “hunting”?

In spring, we enjoy looking at cherry blossoms.

This is called Hanami (花見).

But in autumn, we don't say Kōyōmi (紅葉見)!

There are several explanations for the word “Momijigari.”

One is that people go into the mountains and countryside to look for beautiful autumn leaves, much like going hunting to catch animals.

Of course, please don't break off leaves or branches, even though the word literally

includes “hunting”!
